Obituary for Johnnie Miller, Jr.

Johnnie Miller, Jr.
Johnnie Olen Miller, JR., 78, of Mineola, TX passed away on Thursday, July 27, 2017, in Tyler, TX. He was born on October 20, 1938, in Pampa, TX to the late Johnnie Olen Miller and Ethel Maxine Miller. He was a member of Broad Street Church of Christ in Mineola, TX where he served as an elder. John’s elementary school years were in Pampa, TX. When his family was transferred to Louisiana with Cabot Corp. in the early 1950’s, he attended high school in Franklin, LA, graduating in 1957. While in high school, John enjoyed many activities that included serving as President of the Boys Glee Club and Senior Class President. But what he really loved the most was playing football for the Franklin High Hornets, which earned him a scholarship to Dartmouth. However, he decided to stay local and attend SLI nearby in Lafayette, LA. During that time, he began dating Miss Joy Jones of Baldwin, LA.
In 1960, John enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. John and Joy were married in 1961, and the following years saw three beautiful babies born into the family.
Throughout the years, serving the Lord was the number one priority in the Miller home. With every move to a new location, the Lord provided a loving family of God’s people to assemble with.
During John's long career with IBM, he had multiple roles. During the 1960’s, he worked on the moon landings at NASA in Houston, TX. Then he taught basic computer skills in Kingston, NY. in the 1970’s. Next, he was a manager at IBM New Orleans, LA. Branch Office in the 1980’s. In the 1990’s, he served as an instructor of advanced computer applications for internal and external customers in Dallas, TX.
After John retired from IBM, he dedicated himself to the work of The Church by serving as an Elder at Riverside Church of Christ in Coppell, TX and later at the Broad Street Church of Christ in Mineola, TX.
Throughout his life, he remained a faithful Christian and a devoted husband and father. He loved all of his family very much, and his family loved him so very much.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Jackie Boyd Miller.
Johnnie is survived by his wife of fifty five years, Joy Miller of Mineola, TX; son, Johnnie Olen Miller III of Tustin, CA; two daughters, June Kellie Miller of Mineola, TX, Joan Carol Miller of Bedford, TX; brother-in-laws, Michael Jones and wife Carolyn of Springfield, MO, Keith Jones of Dallas, TX; sister, Judy Maxine Gibson and husband Zane of Wolfe City, TX; two sister-in-laws, Lequita Pinell and husband Harry of Erath, LA, Millie Edmisten of Springdale, AR, and many beloved nieces and nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be on Sunday, July 30, 2017, at Beaty Funeral Home in Mineola from 3-5 pm. Funeral service will be on Monday, July 31, 2017, at 2 pm at Broad Street Church of Christ in Mineola officiated by Paul Good and Mike Tomlinson. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
