Gary Dale Keener born November 18, 1942 in Texarkana, Arkansas to Ruth Needham Keener Orr and the late Ellis Keener of Ashdown, Arkansas and died January 17, 2018 at Mother Frances Hospital following complications from sepsis. Visitation is scheduled for Saturday, January 20, 2018 from 6 – 8 pm. At Gary's request, his remains will be cremated, and a memorial will be held at a later date.
Gary was a 1962 graduate of Mineola High School where he excelled in sports and attended the University of Houston on a football scholarship. He served in the United States Navy and returned to begin a 36-year career as an engineer for the Missouri Pacific Railroad which later merged with Union Pacific.
Gary was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, golfing and hunting. Most of all, he enjoyed being with his family to make up for missed holidays, birthdays and anniversaries while working.
Gary was a member of the Mineola Church of Christ where his life was greatly influenced by his pier fishing friend, Lee Peters. Preceding him in death were his father, Ellis Keener, grandparents Robert Lee and Nancy Vandora Gold Needham and Joseph and Rena Keener, his brother Robert Ellis Keener and his in-laws Bruce, Sr. and Mary Moseley Wakefield. He is survived by his mother Ruth Orr, his wife Diane Wakefield Keener, daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth Kaye and Frank Smith, granddaughter Erin Elizabeth Jenkins and two great granddaughters Avery and Ainsley "Happy" Jenkins, brother Terry (Pat) and nephews and nieces Lee Keener, Sean Orr, Mary Katherine Keener, Patricia Matlock, Anna Bates, Shannon Orr and Beth Chichester , sister-in-law Carolyn Beall, brother-in-law, Ron Wakefield and a multitude of friends.
