Betty Dean Mays

Betty Dean Crane Mays, born on June 27, 1931, in Webster, Texas, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2024. Betty was the beloved daughter of Bascom T. Crane and Ruby Estelle Kight. She grew up in Pickton, Texas, and graduated from Pickton High School in 1949.


Betty dedicated her professional life to Southwestern Bell, where she worked as an account engineer. Her career was marked by dedication and excellence, earning the respect and admiration of her colleagues.


A member of Lakeside Baptist Church in Dallas, Betty was deeply involved in her religious community. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her actions and relationships.


Betty was an extraordinary seamstress, a talent she shared generously. As a member of two sewing clubs, she contributed to many charitable organizations, creating beautiful and useful items for those in need. Additionally, Betty had a passion for reading and was an active member of two book clubs, where she shared her love for literature with friends.


On December 24, 1949, Betty married the love of her life, Elmer R. Mays. They shared many happy years together until Elmer's passing in 1992. Betty's love and devotion to her family were evident in all she did, and she remained a guiding presence in their lives.


Betty is survived by her sister-in-law, Francis Crane; nephews, Joe David Crane (Sharon), Alan Thurston, Rick Crane (Debbie), Larry Crane, Danny Odom (Laura), Mike Odom (Jackie), Ronnie Perkins (Sheri), Mark Perkins (Delma); nieces, Helen Tidwell, Sharon Davis (Andy), Patricia Darden, Jana Pressley (Russ), Jamie Staley, Jan Copeland (C.B.); as well as 46 great-nephews and nieces, 45 great-great-nephews and nieces, and 5 great-great-great-nephews; nieces and numerous cousins.


She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Elmer R. Mays; her parents, Bascom and Ruby Estelle Crane; her brothers, Joe Crane (Bessie Mae), Tom Crane, Billy Crane; her sisters, Elwanda Alford, Imogene Thurston (Arnold), Nelda Odom (Jimmy); sisters-in-law, Martha Satterfield, Valla Faye Mays; brothers-in-law, Ralph Mays, Clovis Mays, Thurman Mays; nephews, Terry Alford, Stanley Darden; niece, Pam Jasick; and great-nephew, Steven Crane.


Betty Dean Mays will be remembered for her kindness, her talents, and her unwavering love for her family and friends. Her legacy of generosity and compassion will continue to inspire all who knew her. May she rest in eternal peace.
