Betty Clark Thompson slipped peacefully into Heaven on March 29, 2014. Betty was born on June 5, 1928, in Mexia, Texas, to Minnie Olena and Charles Boston Clark. Her father worked for Humble Oil (Exxon), and her childhood was spent in the oil boomtowns of East Texas. A graduate of Hawkins High School and Baylor University, Betty taught elementary school and music. On June 11, 1950, she married the love of her life, James B. Thompson, a Baylor graduate and ministerial student at Southwestern Seminary in Ft. Worth. James pastored Baptist churches throughout Texas, ending his primary career with the Baptist General Convention of Texas’ Stewardship Department. Betty was the perfect “preacher’s wife” and was loved dearly by all.
Betty was always involved in the Baptist churches where James was a pastor. She shared her knowledge of the Bible and her wisdom about life with the young married women’s Sunday school classes, and in her later years, she taught the oldest women’s class at First Baptist Mineola. She was a member of PEO, the Twentieth Century Club of Mineola, and was a representative on the Executive Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
Many wonderful holidays were spent at “the Farm,” James and Betty’s retirement home outside of Mineola, Texas. She and her daughter and granddaughters would spend time together preparing and cooking for family celebrations. She was famous for her “meme bread” and chocolate chip cookies that were always ready when her family came to visit.
A love of travel has taken Betty and James all over the United Sates and the world. Mission trips, car trips, cruises, and tour groups have all been a part of traveling with the Thompsons.
Betty is survived by her husband of 63 years, James B Thompson, her daughter Karla Davis and son-in-law Tom Davis of San Antonio, granddaughters Taylor Davis Clark and husband John of Longview, Abby Davis Goyne and husband Matthew of Dallas, and Tori Davis of Austin, and the newest joy of her life, great-grandson, Thomas Greg Clark of Longview. She is also survived by her brother Charles H Clark of Tyler, nephews Parker Clark and Collen Clark, and niece, Melinda Clark Mallory.
