Bettye Jane Gilbert

Dr. Bettye Jane Herlocker Gilbert of Winnsboro passed away on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at her home. She was born on January 13, 1937, in Gilmer, Texas, to the late Edward Taylor Harris and Hazel Mae Carpenter Harris.

She was a longtime educator: former third-grade teacher, teacher and principal of Winnsboro Memorial Middle School, WISD curriculum director, and principal of Winnsboro Elementary School. Dr. Gilbert was also a member of First United Methodist Church of Winnsboro. Survivors include her daughters, Jane Metcalf and husband Justin Brancum of Winnsboro; Amanda Johnson of Winnsboro; grandchildren Keifer Stone, Rebecca Raheb, Jada Hawkins, Taylor Campos, Jesse Johnson, and Jonathan Johnson; and great-grandchildren Jackson Earley, Eliot Campos, Sullivan Campos, and Jude Johnson. Dr. Gilbert was preceded in death by her mother and father; and husbands Thomas J. Metcalf, Jim Herlocker, and Mack Gilbert. Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2023, from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM at First United Methodist Church Family Life Center, 301 Church St., Winnsboro, Texas. A memorial service will follow in the main sanctuary at 2:00 PM with Revs. Debbie Lyons and Henry Suche conducting. Solo will be provided by Robert Watkins.
