Bing Balasia Flanary died peacefully at home on October 3, 2023, at the age of 77. Born April 26, 1946, in Pikeville, Kentucky to Ernest and Dixie Flanary, Bing spent his early childhood in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky. When Bing was six years old, during the Irish migration from the Kentucky coal mines to the factories, his family moved to Dayton, Ohio. After graduating from J. Stebbins High School in Dayton, Bing was drafted into the Army, where he served as an SP4 MP for two years in the Dominican Republic. He then returned to Dayton and attended college at the Dayton Art Institute, where he earned his BA. Bing worked as a salesman in graphic arts supply before he began working at the Bargain Post newspaper. The Bargain Post eventually transferred Bing to the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. He later opened Bing’s Signs in Grand Prairie, where he worked for the remainder of his career.
Bing had an eclectic personality and a brilliant mind. He was both artistic and scientifically talented, which cultivated a unique love for nature and God’s creation. This love led the family on many memorable outdoor adventures. Among Bing’s favorites were hiking in the Grand Tetons, exploring a dude ranch in Colorado, following the Oregon Trail, camping at state parks, admiring the autumn leaves in Ohio, and teaching the kids to ride trees in Beavers Bend. He frequently painted pictures of those adventures. These adventures were shared with the love of his life, Beverly, for over 40 years. The couple married on October 7, 1983. They enjoyed 15 years of retirement after moving away from the city to the tranquility of small-town East Texas in 2008. Bing was a faithful member of the Mineola First Christian Church.
Bing was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Jimmy and Ernest (”Mac”) Flanary. He is survived by his loving wife, Beverly Flanary of Mineola, sister, Janet Moore of Kettering, Ohio, brother, Steve Flanary of Dayton, Ohio, son, Michael Love of Colorado Springs, daughters April Flanary-Palmer of Carrollton and Christi Wilks of Midlothian, ten grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
