Bobby Joe McCartney of Mineola, TX went to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, October 12, 2015. He and his wife of forty five years, Sandra Adams McCartney had been residents of Mineola since 1998.
He was born October 2, 1935 in Delhi, LA and is preceded in death by his father, William Clark McCartney and mother, Nonie Ashley McCartney; six brothers, Howard, Burl, Thomas, Earl, James, and Billy; two sisters, Eunice Townsend and Erline Brock; one son, Ronald McCartney.
He is survived by his stepson, Wayne Apple of Fort Worth, TX; stepdaughter, Debbie Herrera and husband David of North Richland Hills; four daughters, Rhonda McCartney of Newton, KS, Rita Cantrell, Reniece Sulin, Reisa Kimball and husband Steve all of Halstead, KS; two sisters, Paula Wootan and husband Sam of Midland, TX and Mildred Masters of Baytown, TX; he has twelve grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Mr. McCartney was a twenty year veteran of the USAF entering service in October of 1952 at Monroe, LA and retired from honorable service on November 1, 1972 at Carswell AFB, Fort Worth, TX. He received special training in Combat Defense and Law Enforcement and served sixteen years in Military Law Enforcement and Investigations. The remaining four years were in Training and Education.
Mr. McCartney then worked for Sears as an appliance salesman for twenty five years.
Mr. McCartney was also an accomplished musician and played music while stationed overseas in Germany and France in a band called The Swing Masters directed by Pop Phillips. After returning to the U.S. he continued to play lead guitar for Joe Wycoff and the Melody Playboys while stationed at McConnell AFB, KS. In 1971-1972 while stationed at Carswell AFB, Fort Worth, Mr. McCartney played lead guitar and sang harmony with the June Scott Band being taped live at Panther Hall and shown on the television show Cowtown Jamboree every Saturday night on channel eleven.
After his retirement from the Air Force he went on to form his own group The Cavaliers Band playing a wide area of Kansas and Oklahoma. While enjoying retirement in Mineola he formed a gospel group, Saved by Grace playing for five years in local churches and had a nursing home ministry until 2014.
The family would like to thank his longtime caregiver, Stephen Rydzak and staff as well as Marc Usrey and staff of Tyler Hematology and Oncology and Bluebonnet Hospice and nurses.
Visitation will be held at Beaty Funeral Home in Mineola, TX on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 from 6-8 pm. Funeral service will be held at Central Baptist Church in Lindale on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at 10:00 am officiated by rev. Byron Howard. Interment will follow at 2:00 pm at DFW National Cemetery.
