Mr. Carroll Day Nichols passed away on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 at the age of 84. He was born on June 26, 1922 to the late Clyde Day Nichols and Annie Laura Kimbro Nichols. Mr. Nichols received his Bachelors of Science Degree from East Texas State Teachers College in 1943. From 1943 until 1945, he served in the U.S. Army Transportation Corps as a Seargent and was assigned to an army transport ship as a laboratory medical technician in the South Pacific and European theaters. He received his Masters of Arts in Vocational Agriculture from Sam Houston State Teachers College in 1947 and on December 4, 1949 Mr. Nichols married the former Delma Ratliff. Mr. Nichols taught at Pickton and Como-Pickton Schools from 1947 until 1980 and substituted for fourteen years after retiring in 1980. He served as Justice of the Peace of Precinct 4 in Hopkins County, Texas from 1983 until 1994, and was a past Sunday School Director, Teacher and served as a Deacon of Tabernacle Baptist Church. He was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, and was a mason for over fifty years where he served as Past Worshipful Master and Secretary of Pickton Masonic Lodge #1180, and member of the Gus Garrison Masonic Lodge #1273. Mr. Nichols was a member of the Knights Templar, Scottist Rite, Shriners, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Justices of the Peace and Constables Associations, Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas, Professional Ag Workers, and Texas and Southwest Cattle Raisers Association. He served on many community boards and committees including the Hopkins County Civic Center Board. His hobby was raising beef cattle on the family farm where he was born, and "inventing." Mr. Nichols had great bird dogs and loved to hunt quail with his friends. He was preceded in death by brothers, W.L. Nichols and Lynch Nichols and by grandsons, Joe Carroll Korenek and Mark Nichols.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mrs. Delma Nichols of Pickton, sons and daughters-in-law, Louis E. and Gail Nichols of Idabel, OK and Mickey and Minette Nichols of Calhoun, LA; daughter, Penny Spearman of Pickton; brother, D.H. "Jack" Nichols of Mineola; sister, Betty Ratliff of Oklahoma City; eight grandchildren, Nicole Dray, Nancy Thompson, Mike Nichols, Mechelle Rugg, Sylvia Wiggins, Ricky Nichols, Collin Korenek and Gayle Spearman; ten great grandchildren, Blake Wiggins, Baylee Wiggins, Danielle Thompson, Jacob Thompson, Cody Dray, Britney Griggs, Devin Nichols, Chase Blackwelder, Dustin Nichols and Tylar Nichols.
