Charles “Chuck” Wesley Shafer, born on December 28, 1944, in Nelsonville, Ohio, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was the cherished son of Charles G. and Audrey Shafer.
After graduating from high school, Chuck enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, proudly serving as an air traffic controller. His passion for aviation continued beyond his military service, and he went on to work for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for 30 years until his retirement. During his career with the FAA, Chuck received numerous awards for his exceptional service, particularly for successfully assisting planes with crucial instructions to ensure their safe landing.
Chuck was known for his many talents and interests, including a love for singing, leatherworking, and woodworking, where his craftsmanship truly shined. He also had a fondness for Diet Coke and anything chocolate, always enjoying these small pleasures in life. A devoted Christian, Chuck knew and loved our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, finding strength and peace in his faith.
Chuck was ready to reunite with his soul mate, Ann Shafer, in Heaven, whom he was married to for 41 loving years. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Audrey Shafer, and his sister, Betty Dew Plummer.
Chuck is survived by his sons, Charles Shafer Jr. and Danny Bell and his spouse Dayna; daughters, Debra Beard and her spouse Andy, Aundra Bell, and Latisha Shafer; sisters, Lu Flowers and Margie Adams and her spouse Randy; nephews Ed and Barb Flowers and family, Mike and Julie Flowers and family, Rex Flowers and family; nieces Cathy and Rick Huddy and family, Melissa Flowers and family, Debbie and Dennis Werner and family, Wendy and Wes Underwood and family; grandchildren Brett and Lyndsie Shafer and family, Jonathan George, Adam Alexander, Jacqueline Moreno and her spouse Humberto, Tasha Beverly and her spouse Wayne, Charity Waters and her spouse Kevin, Danielle Bell, Gracelynn Beard, Charity Beard, and LillyAnne Beard; great-grandchildren Ruben Moreno, Braden Alexander, Kayci Beverly, Dominic Moreno, Julianna Moreno, Eva Waters, Luke Beverly, Emmie Waters, Joy George, and Samuel Waters.
Chucks' legacy of love, faith, craftsmanship, and devotion to family will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him. A celebration of his life will be held at New Pickton Cemetery on October 11 at 2 pm.
