Claude Wayne Webb Sr, age 89 of Mineola/Tyler, passed away on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, in Tyler, Texas. He was born on October 4, 1933 to the late William Carl Lewis and Helen (Sawyer) Webb Cook. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elva Jo Lewis Webb.
He played Varsity basketball and graduated from Morgan High School in 1952. After graduation he met Elva Jo Lewis the Christmas of 1952 in a local café in a small town in Bosque County. She was visiting grandparents, so he bought her a coke and slipped money in the jukebox and asked her to dance. After that brief meeting they continued to correspond and a year later, even though they had only seen each other for a few hours, decided to elope. With the help of his mother and her friend they got married in December of 1953 and she continued to be the love of his life until her death in 2019. Together they had 2 children, Claude Wayne Webb Jr., and Loraine Webb Epps.
His career began by driving a truck for a supply company, but it wasn’t long before he was in management as a counter man. With his expertise he opened his own business, building a chain of 3 stores. His success led to an offer as a manufacturer’s rep. His personality and gift of connection were a perfect fit. To be present and listen intently and care deeply were everyday goals until the very end.
He enjoyed all sports but his favorite sport to watch would be anything his grandchildren or great grandchildren played. Not only did he travel around Texas following them, but also across the South and the Midwest. He was their biggest fan. He also loved NASCAR, golf, Cedar Creek Lake and any game whether it was dominoes or cards. He was a fierce competitor until the end.
He was a member of the Mineola Masonic Lodge and the Sharon Shrine Temple and recently received his 50-year pin. He was also a long-time member of the 1st Baptist Church in Mineola and served as a volunteer in the nursery.
He is survived by his son, Claude Wayne Webb Jr. and his wife, Susie; daughter, Loraine Epps and her husband, Duane; sister, Pat Linhoff; grandchildren Alex Epps (Crystal), Rebekah Arrington (Macie), Andrew Epps (Clarissa), Emily Kelly (Dennis), Jessica Webb, Caroline Martel (Patrick), Hondo Webb, Jackson Webb (Madeline) and Katie Webb; and great-grandchildren, Hannah Epps, Jake Chaney, John Kelly, Claire Kelly, Joseph Kelly & Sophia Kelly. Nephew Brian Linhoff (Gina) and great niece Maria.
The visitation will be held on Sunday, June 4, 2023, from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm. A celebration of life service will be held immediately following at 3:00 pm at Beaty Funeral Home, 5320 S. State Hwy. 37 Mineola, TX 75773 with Kendall Banks conducting.
