Mrs. Homer A. Smith (Dale Dickey Smith)
Dale Dickey Smith passed away on March 3, 2010, at her residence in Austin, Texas. She was 88. She was in good health until a few months prior to her death due to complications related to cancer. Her husband, Homer Alexander Smith, preceded her in death in 2007 after 66 years of marriage.
Mrs. Smith was born on December 23, 1921, in Winnsboro, Texas to Dr. Robert Dickey and Lucy Lee Eskridge Dickey. Dale's father was a 1911 graduate of the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and opened his practice of medicine in Winnsboro in 1912. She loved to ride along with him as he made house calls to patients in the community. Her grandparents were Dr. and Mrs. Daniel Dickey and Dr. and Mrs. Charles Eskridge. She attended North Texas State University but interrupted her studies when World War II was declared. She married Homer A. Smith prior to his being sent to the Indo-China theatre of service during the war. When he returned home, their firstborn child was 15 months old.
Dale was a member of the First Baptist Church of Winnsboro, Texas and was active in bridge clubs in the Winnsboro and Sulphur Springs area. She and her late husband were members of the Sulphur Springs Country Club and enjoyed social activities with their good friends. Dale loved to travel. She took great pride in her daughters, her grandchildren and her nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her daughters, Dr. Sharon Smith Raimer, and husband Dr. Ben Raimer, of Galveston, Texas, and Mrs. Janet Smith Kelley and husband Mr. Russell T. Kelley of Austin, Texas. She has five grandchildren, Russell T. Kelly II and wife Emily V. Kelley of Houston, Anna Raimer McDonald and husband Damien K. McDonald of Redondo Beach, California, Dr. David William Raimer of Galveston, Dr. Lauren Raimer-Goodman and her husband, Rev. Michael Raimer-Goodman of Houston, and Ms. Kristyn Kelley of Austin, Texas and Palo Alto, California. She also has three great-grandsons, Russell T. Kelly III of Houston and twins, Archer Snow McDonald and Jack Alexander McDonald of Redondo Beach, California.
She is also survived by sisters Carolyn Dickey Peterson of Montgomery, Texas, and Doris Dickey McLarty of Stephenville, Texas, as well as her sister-in-law Geraldine Dickey of Waco, Texas. Nieces and nephews include Mr. Robert McLarty, Dr. Dickey Peterson, Mr. Gary Peterson, Mrs. Kathy McLarty Mangum, Mr. Thomas Dickey, and Mrs. Debbie Dickey Dunham.
In addition to her husband, Dale was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Robert E. Dickey, and brothers-in-law Ben Jack McLarty and August H. Peterson.
Visitation will be from 6 until 8 PM on Friday, March 5, 2010, at the Beaty Funeral Home in Winnsboro. Services will be conducted at 2 PM on Saturday, March 6, 2010, at the Beaty Funeral home with burial immediately following in the Lee Cemetery in Winnsboro. Services will be conducted by Rev. Michael Raimer-Goodman. Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews.
