Aunt Sister, Remembered
Although it may be somewhat of a surprise to many, Creola had an adventurous spirit blended with the compassionate heart of a servant. As a child she would help her mother with chores of canning, cooking, sewing and caring for her younger brother Jack. She learned to quilt making friendship quilts throughout her life. When her brothers enlisted in the service at the beginning of WWII she too wanted to serve and desired to join the Air Force to become a pilot but honoring her mother’s wishes she instead stayed home and sewed pajamas for soldiers. Later in her life hand making elaborate doll clothing, Creola restored broken dolls that were collected by fireman to be given the underprivileged children. She was independent, and at a time that it wasn’t the norm, she completed Business School and began a career as an office manager and book keeper. In retirement, she was always serving wherever she could whether as a Volunteer in the Library or adventuring traveling the world.
Delia is preceded in death by her parents, Alfred Alvin and Vida Tibitha Hester; her husband, George Chester McCurley; step daughte, Carolyn Faulkner.
