Don Wyatt Coffey, 1936-2021
Don Coffey passed away peacefully on October 10, 2021, at the age of 85.
Don was born in Lubbock, Texas on June 5, 1936, to Esker and Lois Coffey. He was the oldest child with a younger sister Paula and a brother Randy. During his childhood Don grew up in Hale Center, Texas and on his grand-father’s (Jesse Coffey) ranch in West Texas. Before graduating from Hale Center High School Don worked at the local newspaper as an apprentice for Tom Rambo. After high school Don studied geology at Texas Tech University, Lubbock. In 1958 Don served in the U.S. Army where he managed a map depot in Korea. After receiving an honorable discharge Don enjoyed a successful career in the petroleum industry as an operator specializing in start-ups. He worked for Skelly, Phillips, ARCO and BP. His career spanned five decades in which he worked in Louisiana, New Mexico, and Alaska. In 1965 Don and Sandra Gearner were married in Lovington, New Mexico. The couple have three children: Cynthia, Esker and Tarn. The family lived on Lazy Mountain near Palmer, Alaska and on a remote homestead near Talkeetna, Alaska. Don enjoyed hunting, fishing, flying and all things outdoors.
Don is survived by his wife Sandra (Winnsboro, Texas), his daughter Cynthia and her husband Mike Thigpen (Polok, Texas), his son Esker (Nikiski, Alaska) and his son Tarn and wife Adrianne (Nenana, Alaska), 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Beaty Funeral Home, Winnsboro Texas on Saturday, November 20th at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial donations be made to the Winnsboro Gun Club, Winnsboro Texas.
