Estell Lenita Johnson

April 29, 1958 — April 12, 2024

Estell Lenita Johnson, a pioneering figure in journalism and public health, passed away on April 12, 2024, at the age of 65. Born on April 29, 1958, in Winnsboro, Texas, Lenita was the beloved daughter of Bob Johnson, mother and step father, Mae Willie Johnson-Lovingood and Walter Lovingood.

Lenita's life was marked by a remarkable dedication to fostering harmony and advancing important causes. She distinguished herself early in her career as the first African American Programming Producer at KMBC-TV 9 in 1987. Producing Emmy Award winning documentaries like Followers of Faith, Notes From Spain & others that were nominated. Her work there paved the way for greater diversity in media representation and storytelling.

Her passion for social change led her to Columbia University Health Systems, where she served as the National Communications Director for the Injury Free Coalition for Kids. Over two decades, Lenita spearheaded initiatives to expand injury prevention efforts nationwide, leaving an indelible mark on communities across the United States.

Among her many accomplishments, Lenita was particularly proud of her creation and implementation of National Injury Free Prevention Day. This initiative brought together organizations and institutions from over 50 cities to raise awareness about childhood injuries, symbolized by the iconic green lighting of public spaces on November 18, 2020 and is still ongoing.

Outside of her professional endeavors, Lenita was deeply committed to her faith and community. She brought her intelligence, love, compassion, and empathy to St. James United Methodist and Second Baptist Churches, where she served with dedication.

In retirement, Lenita embraced life fully, splitting her time between Kansas City, Missouri, and her hometown of El Paso, Texas. She cherished her friendships, especially the 'After 9 Sisters Club' and remaining connected with loved ones.

Lenita is survived by her three brothers, Virgil Dixon, Dexter Friday, and Charles McGill, as well as her nephews Nathan Friday, Charles McGill Jr., Karringtyn McGill, and Jayden Boyle; one niece, Natalie Renee Mitchell and her children Maxwell Mitchell and Kassidi Mitchell. She is preceded in death by her brother Samuel Friday and biological mother, Pinkie McGill.

The loss of Lenita leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew her. Her legacy of compassion, advocacy, and service will endure as a beacon of hope and inspiration. As we mourn her passing, we take solace in knowing that heaven has gained a new angel.
