Memorial services for Mr. Frank Mayo White, 91, of Winnsboro will be held Thursday, December 11, 2008 at 10:00AM at the First United Methodist Church in Winnsboro with the Rev. Allen Snider and Henry Suche officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3:30PM at the Oakwood Cemetery in Corsicana, TX. Visitation will be held on Wednesday night from 6-8pm at the funeral home.


Mr. White died Sunday, December 7, 2008, in Winnsboro. He was born November 18, 1917, in Corsicana to the late Edna Mayo White and Fred Saigor White.


He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1946 during which time he attended officer training school and was promoted to the rank of major. In 1942, he married Ethel Louise Skelton who preceded him in death. They were married for 58 years.


After World War II, Mr. White moved to Tomball, Texas, where he was employed by Humble Oil Company. In 1956, he moved with his family to Winnsboro where he became owner and operator of Winnsboro Well Service Co. Following his retirement, he enjoyed ranching and spending time with his family and friends.


Mr. White was an active member of the Winnsboro community serving in a number of positions both in his church, the First United Methodist, and as a civic leader. He was a former city council member, serving as mayor from 1968-1973, and a member of the WISD board. He served as director of the Winnsboro Area Chamber of Commerce and was a charter member and chairman of the Wood County Industrial Commission and of the Wood County Economic Council. He served as chairman of the Winnsboro Future Foundation and was head of the prison steering committee which was instrumental in bringing the Johnston Unit to Winnsboro. He served on the Board of Directors at First National Bank and, prior to that, of Mineola Savings and Loan. He was also a member of the Board of Governors of Presbyterian Hospital of Winnsboro. He was named Man of the Year for 1982 and Outstanding Civic Leader in 1997. He was a Master Mason and member in good standing of the Corsicana Lodge #174.


Mr. White was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four brothers and two sisters. He is survived by two daughters and their husbands: Dr. Mary White-Scharf and Dr. Brad Scharf of Winchester, MA., and Catherine and James Tarpley of Kings Country; five grandchildren: Christey Clayton and husband Tony of Mt. Vernon; Jason Jones and wife Suzun of Alba, Benjamin, Valery and Stephen Scharf of Winchester, MA.; six great-grandchildren: Megan, Dillon, Jonathan, and Jacey Clayton; Daylan and Mason Jones.
