Gregory "Gregg" Callaway, 73, of Mt. Vernon, Texas, passed away peacefully at home on April 13, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family. Born on September 20, 1951, to the late Morgan Paul and Ray Fern Callaway. He graduated from W.W. Samuel High School in 1969. Gregg was a proud Texan with a servant’s heart and a deep love for his community, his family, and his faith.
Gregg devoted his life to public service, proudly serving as a sheriff’s deputy until his retirement. His commitment to protecting and helping others was a defining part of his life, and his impact on the community will not be forgotten.
Outside of his career, Gregg was a man of many passions. He loved the outdoors—whether it was hunting, fishing, or honing his skills with firearms. He also found joy and purpose in carpentry, often building and fixing with his hands, always willing to lend his time and talents to others.
Yet above all else, Gregg’s greatest devotion was to his faith and family. He was a steadfast follower of the Lord and a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He leaves behind his cherished wife of more than 54 years, Susan Callaway; daughters Jennifer Starr, Kristeen Adams, Rachel Brackenridge, Leah Stevens, and Sarah Callaway; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Gregg was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Craig “Marty” Callaway and Reginald “Glenn” Callaway.
Gregg’s legacy of love, strength, and service will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
