Hazel Ione Champlin

February 1, 1927 — August 5, 2022

Hazel Ione Champlin, 95, of Quitman Texas departed this life for her Heavenly Home on August 5,2022. She was born on February 1, 1927, in Corsicana Texas to Maurice and Dellia Ward. Hazel was born into her family as the only girl with 4 older brothers. She was given the name “Baby” which she was called most of her life.
Hazel is preceded in death by her husband Ernest Odell Champlin, her daughter Hazel Odette Shortnacy, her son Ernest Odell Champlin II, her son Walter David Champlin and her great granddaughter Hailey Bently. Hazel is survived by her children, Tony Champlin of Lafayette Louisiana, Wanda and Joe Woesthaus of Edom Texas, Debbie and Martin Flores of Quitman Texas, Hulon Champlin of Quitman Texas and her daughter in law Gladys Champlin of Niangua Missouri, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and her friends. She was very proud of her 7 children, 14 Grandchildren, 20 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great Great Grandchildren.
Hazel was a member of Faith Baptist Church of Quitman Texas. Though she was not able to attend services the last years she looked forward to the cards, phone calls and the church family visits.
Hazel became an RN, going to college and earning her degree after the age of 40. She had wanted to be a nurse from a young age, but life happened. She met and married the love of her life and had children, but she never lost sight of her dream of being a nurse. She was dedicated to her profession, and she loved her patients. Hazel retired from nursing at the age of 82.
Our beloved Mother lived her life with grace and dignity. She bestowed on her children to have confidence in themselves, cherish those around you, a strong work ethic and as she would say “put one foot in front of the other and keep walking. Mother loved family gathering, especially going on fishing trips with lots of food, music, and laughter. She loved her life in East Texas, being able to see the lake every day. Her family is left with a lot of fond memories.
