Obituary for James Alfred "Jim" Burnett

James Alfred “Jim” Burnett, a devoted family man, tireless public servant, and proud Texan, passed away on May 6, 2025, at the age of 85. Born on February 16, 1940, in Huntsville, Texas, to John W. Burnett and Alma Corner Burnett, Jim grew up in the West Sandy community of Huntsville where his roots ran deep and his character was shaped by small-town values, hard work, and family devotion.

A 1958 graduate of Richards High School, Jim was a standout athlete and the MVP of the school’s state championship basketball team. Known for his competitive spirit and quick wit, he left a lasting impression both on and off the court. One legendary tale from his youth involved the purchase of a motorcycle with his hard-earned savings. Attempting to impress some girls at the local soda shop, Jim popped a wheelie and promptly crashed into a bar ditch in front of the train tracks. Though unhurt, he never rode a motorcycle again—carrying the memory (and the embarrassment) of that moment for the next 70 years.

Jim's professional life was as diverse as it was dedicated. He served the State of Texas faithfully, worked as a cattle rancher, truck driver, business proprietor, and served his community in public office as a Walker County politician. Throughout his career, Jim earned the respect of many for his honest approach, dedication to service, and fierce loyalty to the people he represented.

Jim was an active member of the Rotary Club and a lifelong Methodist. His passions included raising cattle, shooting pool and snooker, and cheering on his favorite basketball teams. His homespun wisdom, sense of humor, and warm smile left a mark on all who knew him.

Jim was married to three beloved women in his lifetime: Nita Hough Burnett, Juana Byers Burnett, and Sonia “Sonny” Meyer Burnett, whom he married on January 12, 1991. Though Sonny preceded him in death, their time together was cherished and filled with love.

He is also preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Willie Gayle and John Kenneth Burnett; his eldest son, Jody Glynn Burnett, who passed at just 3½ years old; and another son, Kerry Vaughn.

He is survived by his devoted sister, Wanda May Averitt, and by his loving children: Jamey & Karen Burnett, William Churchwell, Jaala Churchwell, Stephen & Tykie Norred, and David & Cindy Vaughn. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Kevin & Ashley (Burnett) Montejano, Jody & Morgan Burnett, TJ & Kinsey Miguez, Savannah Claire Burnett, Zack Martin, and Hayley Martin.

Jim was blessed with a large and lively group of great-grandchildren: Jace & Atticus Montejano, Chloe & Ethan Roberts, Thomas & Jody Jr. Burnett, Victoria, Avalynn, and Waylon Holman; Stonewall, Beau, Emalia, and Gabriella Jackson; Dominic Vaughn, Logan Bryant, Brooklynn Walker, Bentley & McKenzee Busbee, Graceland Martin, Nova Martin, and Sadie Kate & Elania Lenard.

Jim Burnett will be remembered for his strength, humor, humility, and the unshakable love he held for his family and community. He lived a full life guided by integrity, faith, and a little Texas grit. His stories, lessons, and laughter will echo in the lives of all who had the honor of knowing him.
