Lois Inez Scott
March 1, 1934 – Jan. 7, 2016
Lois Inez Scott, 81, of Emory, Texas, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, Jan. 7. She passed away peacefully at Sulphur Springs Hospital, with her husband of more than 62 years, Bobby G. Scott, by her side.
She will be remembered by her family and friends as a woman with a strong Christian faith who was loved by many. She was a warm, gentle soul who loved her life in the country at the 26-acre Scott Pecan Orchard, the site of many family gatherings and a huge family reunion every Memorial Day weekend. She worked in many aspects of the farm, from mowing the grass to cracking, cleaning, packaging and selling pecans. But her favorite job was meeting and talking with customers, many of whom came back every fall to pick up some of the fresh crop and visit. Another favorite was competitive lawn mower races with her husband at the pecan farm on Redbird Lane. When she was younger, she went to the Rains County Commissioners Court to ask that the county road they lived on be designated Redbird Lane because of the abundance of her favorite birds that live there.
For the past couple of years she had lived at the Senior Suites Care and Rehab Center in Emory, where her husband visited with her practically every evening. She died from complications of Alzheimer’s Disease.
Lois and Bobby were both raised in Mineola, even delivered by the same doctor when they were born, Dr. Coleman. They raised their three daughters in Mesquite, and Bobby worked for the Dallas Fire Department for more than 29 years before retiring in 1988 as a driver. They were married April 16, 1953, and moved to Fayetteville, N.C., the next year, where Bobby served in the Army at Fort Bragg. They lived in Durango, Colo.,, for a short time before moving to Mesquite in 1958.
Lois and her family attended Rollingwood Hills Baptist Church in Mesquite, where Lois was a Sunday School teacher. She enjoyed sewing, traveling (including riding motorcycles) and spending time with her extended family, including many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Burl and Nora Smith Humphreys of Mineola, her sister Jeanette Austin of Dayton, brothers George and Robert Humphreys of Mineola.
Lois is survived by her husband Bobby Scott; sister Mary Jo Hardin and Howard Hardin of Leavenworth, Kan.; and three daughters: Terry Scott Bertling and husband Frank Bertling of San Antonio, and their son Bradley Austin Bertling and wife Lindsay Bertling of Watertown, Tenn.; Tamara Scott Garner and her husband John Garner of Forney, and daughter Crystal Bissell of Mesquite, son Shawn Smith of Dallas, daughter Natalie Clark of Rockwall, son Dane Garner and wife Stephanie Garner of Fort Worth and daughter Courtney Harrison and husband Lance Harrison of Pacific, Mo.; daughter Lisa Scott Junge and husband Ron Junge of Mesquite and daughter Camron Hart and husband John Hart of Mesquite. The Scotts have 17 great-grandchildren and another on the way.
