Mamie L Smith

March 6, 1915 — December 6, 2006

Mrs. Mamie Mullings Smith

of Dallas and Mineola was born in Alamo, Arkansas, March 6, 1915 to Hattie Louisa Pate and Mack Elihu Mullings and died December 6, 2006, in Richardson.

Raised and educated in Dallas, she married John Stanton (Sebe) Smith of Mineola. There she was active in numerous social and civic groups for more than 60 years. She was1964 Mineola Woman of the Year, Meredith Library board member, Matron of The Eastern Star, and at various times served as president of the Delphian Library Club, Fannie Marchman Garden Club, PTA, Band Boosters, Yellow Jacket Boosters; served on the Mineola Centennial Celebration Committee; and was active in the Mineola Chamber of Commerce. She loved to read and was knowledgeable and articulate. She gave insightful historical programs and book reviews to large groups. Her devotionals and Sunday School Class lessons at First Baptist Church were memorable.

Professionally, she was bookkeeper for the family's various business interests in Mineola. She was a notable cook, winning awards for her skills. She drew the first map of Mineola as she was flown in a private plane over the city in the mid-40s; copies were distributed as a gift to the community. She loved flowers and was knowledgeable about native plants and trees. Her home was surrounded by flowering plants throughout the year, and she led her family to completely reforest a lake property the family owned with pine saplings.

She was devoted to her family and friends. In 1997 she and Sebe moved to Treemont Retirement Community and lived there until his death in 2001. They had been married 70 years. Later she resided at Appletree Court. Mamie was comforted through Samaritan Hospice Care while living her final days at The Plaza of Richardson

Those who knew her in the last years speak of her smile, cheerful disposition, and her ability to make people feel she was interested in them and cared about them. She was loved by many who called her Ms. Mamie.

Mamie Smith's faith was strong and in the end she looked forward to the peace of heaven. Her last words to her daughter were, "I'll be home for Christmas." And home with her Savior she will celebrate this year.

She is survived by her children: Dr. John Mack Smith and wife Diane, Cape Coral, FL; Dr. Curtis Smith and Susan, Auburn, AL; Judith Smith Oglesby, Dallas.
