Mary Ann Cummings, a dedicated professional, beloved wife, and cherished family member, passed away on July 8, 2024, at the age of 82. Born in Pampa, Texas, to Frank W. Kelley and Mary Ann Kelley on November 2, 1941, Mary Ann spent her early years in the close-knit community of Pampa, where she developed lifelong friendships and a passion for learning.
Mary Ann graduated from Pampa High School, where she participated in Drums and Twirling, before pursuing higher education at the University of Colorado for her bachelor's degree. She later attended the University of Texas Dental School, where she was part of the second class of women admitted, earning and her DDS. Mary Ann specialized in pedodontics and dedicated her career to personal practice in Friendswood and teaching as a professor at the University of Texas Dental School in both Houston and San Antonio.
Her professional accomplishments were paralleled by her active involvement in various civic and fraternal organizations, including Alpha Gamma Delta and the Child Evangelism Fellowship's Good News Club. A faithful member of Holly Brook Baptist Church, Mary Ann participated in Vacation Bible School and Awanas. She participated in the Women's Bible Study in Winnsboro demonstrating her deep commitment to her faith and community.
Mary Ann had a zest for life, finding joy in hobbies such as fishing, camping, traveling, and spending time with her beloved dog, Lacie. Her love story with Bob Cummings began in 2006 at an Octoberfisch fly-fishing competition near Fredericksburg. They were married on December 14, 2008. Together, they enjoyed many adventures, including a memorable trip to Denali State Park in Alaska in 2014.
Mary Ann is survived by her devoted husband, Bob Cummings; her brother, Frank W. Kelley, Jr.; her sister, Patsy D. Smith; her sister-in-law, Joanne Spencer; her stepdaughters, Susan Miles and Jennifer Williams; and eight step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Martha Lou Schakel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Dallas Theological Seminary Foundation at 3909 Swiss Ave. Dallas, TX 75204-6411 in the Wyss Advised Fund, a cause close to Mary Ann's heart.
Mary Ann Cummings will be remembered for her dedication to her profession, her unwavering faith, and her love for her family and community. Her legacy of kindness, compassion, philanthropy, and excellence will continue to inspire all who knew her.
