Mary Jean Woodard McKnight, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and friend, was called home to her Lord and Savior on July 13, 2024. She was born on July 29, 1929, to G.H. “Dick” Woodard and Opal Woodard in Winnsboro, Texas and lived a long life full of generosity, joy, and purpose.
A proud graduate of Winnsboro High School in 1948, Mary moved to Hawkins, Texas, where she began her career as a telephone operator. It was there that she met the love of her life, Jack Hiram “Buddy” McKnight. They were married on September 11, 1948, sharing 23 beautiful years together.
After her time as a telephone operator, Mary dedicated 25 years to the Kmart Corporation, where she served as both a door greeter and photo department manager. Customers fondly remember her warm welcome of “Welcome to Kmart” and her joy in showcasing photos of her grandchildren on the cameras for sale.
Her family was her greatest treasure, and she took immense pride in watching her daughters and grandchildren grow. An avid gardener, she found joy in tending to her plants and flowers, which brightened her home and spirit. She was a devoted member of Lighthouse Baptist Church in Payne Springs, Texas. Mary also adored animals, especially her cherished four-legged companion, Dolly. With her signature style, she always ensured her hair was perfect, her lipstick was just right, and she was dressed to impress.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Gearner “Dick” and Opal Woodard; brother, Larry Woodard; and daughters, Mary Lou McKnight and Judy Maddox and sister-in-law, Ruby Woodard. She is survived by her daughters, Jill Williams and husband Walter, Jackie Ward and husband Monty, Jeannie Mewbourn and husband David; brothers, Rev. Charlie Woodard and wife Edith, Jim Woodard, Truman Woodard and wife Shelly; grandchildren, Russell Clyburn and wife Jessica, Marcie Wood and husband Brad, Billy Whitehead, Dylan Williams and wife Kimberley, Kristi Mordhorst and husband Matt, Amanda Ward, Monty Ward and wife Charlsie, Matt Ward and wife Cheyenne, Kenneth Sigler and wife Rebekah, Carly Wadle and husband Jacob, great-grandchildren (25); great-great grandchildren (3); and many friends.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the wonderful caregivers at Heart to Heart Hospice and her sitters, Dale Thompson and Kristen Goodnar for their compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, we instead ask for donations in honor of Mary to be made to Heart to Heart Hospice.
