Mary White

Mary Dortch White, May 10, 1928 – November 13, 2020 Mary was born in Sulphur Springs, Texas to Newman and Willie Martin Dortch. She went to Park Springs School and graduated from East Texas State University with her Masters degree in education. Mary devoted her life to serving others through teaching. She spent several years working at the Department of Education in Austin. She was a teacher in Munday, Winnsboro, and Lindale school districts. She taught all levels of students including special education and college, but she found her passion teaching Kindergarten in Hawkins where she taught until she retired. She married her husband, Bill in 1949. They were married for 57 years. Although she didn't swim, she taught many friends how to water ski. She enjoyed spending time with her family, playing 42 and Skipbo, camping, and RVing in all of the United States and parts of Canada. She fulfilled a life long dream of going to Alaska in 2016. She became a member of Shooks Chapel in 1938. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Hawkins Study Club, Retired Teachers, Eastern Stars, and the First United Methodist Church of Winnsboro, TX joining in 1966. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bill, daughter Sharon White and sister Waulinda Downs. She is survived by her daughters Nancy Adams, Judy Jones and husband Chuck, grandchildren Emma Jones, Leia Gray and husband Michael, and Jeremy Adams, and three great-grand children. Many thanks go to her caregivers at Trinity Mission, Heart-to-Heart Hospice, and the caregivers that took care of her at home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the First United Methodist Church of Winnsboro or Heart-to-Heart Hospice. Burial will be at Shooks Chapel Cemetery located at 4101 Texas Highway 154 S Sulphur Springs, TX. 75482 on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. The visitation will be in the Fellowship Hall from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. prior to the graveside. The family request anyone attending to please wear a mask.
