Nonia Dell Mcfarlin

February 5, 1928 — June 5, 2023

Nonia Dell Robinson McFarlin, 95, died Monday, June 5, 2023, at the home of her son and his wife, Billy Ray and Sherrie McFarlin, in Flint.

Mrs. McFarlin was born February 5, 1928, at Baber Hospital in Winnsboro, to the late Artemus and Lucille McCrary Robinson.

She graduated from Winnsboro High School in 1945.

She married Bill McFarlin, local barber, on June 20, 1945. He also preceded her in death in 2014.

Mrs. McFarlin was a homemaker and a nurse in Winnsboro for 38 years. After her husband’s passing, she lived alone on the family farm at Coke until recently, when she moved to Flint to be with Billy Ray and Sherrie.

She was a member of Lake Fork Baptist Church.

Mrs. McFarlin is also survived by three grandchildren Brent Wood; Staci Wedemeyer and Bryan McFarlin; and nine great-grandchildren Laramie Wedemeyer; Kye Wedemeyer; Tilly McFarlin; Tess McFarlin; Brody McFarlin; Tate Wood; Taylor Wood; Justin Wood and Colton Wood; nephew Gregg Gipe and wife, Roxanne and niece Kena Ridge and husband, Norman.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. McFarlin was preceded in death by her brother, Billy Gerald Robinson; sister, Myrtie “Snooks” Findley; granddaughter, Elizabeth McFarlin and niece, Patricia McBride.

Nonia Dell loved to golf. She and Bill traveled to play with friends on golf courses across the country.

Everyone who knew her loved to be treated to her cooking. Bill and Billy Ray would fight over her chocolate icebox pie, which she made from a recipe willed to her by the late Mrs. R.C. Martin.

While playing football one Friday night, Billy Ray found a band medal belonging to her son, Klyne Martin, who died in 2013. Billy Ray returned the medal the next week, and Mrs. Martin made him a chocolate icebox pie to thank him for his kindness.

She continued to make pies for Billy Ray’s birthdays and Christmases through the years, but she would not share the recipe with Nonia Dell. Mrs. Martin said it was a secret family recipe. However, she did leave it to Nonia Dell when she died.

Her granddaughter, Staci, says her granny’s fried pies and cobblers were her favorites.

“One of my favorite memories with her was picking berries and fruit and then making the pies and cobblers,” Staci said. “She made many fried pies for Lions Club fundraisers, and they sold out quickly.”

She recalled that her granny’s chicken fried steak and stews were “close seconds” to the fried pies and cobblers.

“She made chicken, beef and squirrel stew, and all three were phenomenal,” Staci remembers. “She just didn’t tell very many people when she used the squirrel.”

Visitation will be held Monday, June 12, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Beaty Funeral Home in Winnsboro, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m., with Billy Ray and Jimmy Findley officiating. Special music will be provided by Michael Gunn.

Bryan McFarlin, Mike Wedemeyer, Kye Wedemeyer, Brent Wood and Gregg Gipe will serve as pallbearers, with Sonny McCrary and Jimmy McBride serving as honorary pallbearers.
