Peggy Blackmon was born Sunday, November 24, 1929, in Wood County, the youngest of 9 children (two brothers and seven sisters) of George and Artie Tucker. Growing up in a loving Christian home, with a father who was a deacon and a mother who was a Bible teacher, Peggy was saved at the age of 9. From the beginning, God had his hand on Peggy.
Peggy married R. O. Blackmon, Jr. on Saturday, April 1, 1950. She moved her membership from Central Baptist to Rose Hill Baptist Church. The Lord blessed Peggy and R.O. with twin daughters, Brenda and Linda in 1951. R.O. was saved in 1952 and ordained as a deacon in 1954. Another daughter, Lainey, arrived in 1954. Peggy saw all three daughters saved at Rose Hill, as well as four of her five grandchildren. The fifth grandchild was saved in Dickinson. Peggy was also blessed with three sons-in-law, two grandsons-in-law, two granddaughters-in-law and 11 great-grandchildren.
As a young wife and mother, Peggy could have easily stayed at home when R.O. was away working on the railroad. However, as a dedicated Christian, Peggy brought her three little girls to church and taught Sunday School on those Sundays as well.
Peggy's first elected office was at Central Baptist as assistant teacher of the Senior High Sunday School Class in 1949. She took her first District WMA office in 1954 as song leader and served in numerous offices for over 40 years. She served as Bible teacher of her local WMA as she once said, "longer than I can remember", and she taught in some capacity in church for over 50 years.
Many might be prideful to have the positions that Peggy has had, but Peggy was humbled and always gave God the honor and glory. She walked daily with God through the promise of Isaiah 41:10, which she claimed as her own after her life mate R.O. died in October 1989:
"Fear not, for I am with you,
be not dismayed for I am your God.
I will strengthen you.
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with the right hand
of my righteousness."
Peggy was a loyal and dedicated lady in the Lord's work. Her desire was to help others strive to be more like the Lord and to carry on His work. She was a wonderful wife, Mother, Grandmommie, Gram, sister, aunt, teacher, mentor, and friend.
