Carolyn Newton, age 84, of Winnsboro, Texas, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 8,
2023, in Winnsboro, Texas. Born on December 15, 1938, in the Mount Zion community in
Wood County, Texas, Carolyn was the sixth (and final) child of Ruth and Ted Cater. Carolyn
remained in the Winnsboro area until moving with her family to Garland, Texas, where she
graduated high school. Within a week of high school graduation in 1957, she was back at
Winnsboro marrying Max D. Newton, the skinny boy she had known for much of her life who
used to tie her pig tails to the school bus seat.
Upon completion of Max’s schooling at Texas A&M and a short tenure at Fulshear, Texas,
Carolyn and Max returned to the Tinney Chapel community just south of Winnsboro where
they raised three children (Teddy, Cheryl Ann, and Jeff), two grandchildren (Duston and
Jennifer). black angus cows, and a diversity of birds and animals that would have made Noah
proud. Carolyn was a lifelong member of Tinney Chapel United Methodist Church. Jobs
outside the home included parts person at Newton Tractor and co-owner/operator of Newton
Farm & Ranch Supply in Quitman, Texas.
Carolyn shared 49 years of marriage and life with Max before his death in 2005. She married
Benny Brown of Yantis in 2012, enjoying 3 years before his death in 2015. Carolyn was also
preceded in death by her parents (Ted and Ruth Cater), 3 brothers (Ray Cater, Glenn Cater, and
Lee Allen Cater), 2 sisters (Bobbie Hollingsworth, Marie Camp), and a son (Jeff Newton).
Survivors include son Teddy Newton and wife Maggie of Winnsboro; daughter Cheryl Ann
Newton of Tyler; daughter-in-law Tanya Newton of Winnsboro; grandson Duston Newton and
wife Karrie of Winnsboro; granddaughter Jennifer Braught and husband Robert of Baton Rouge,
LA; granddaughter Kayla Mills of Lindale; Ezra Newton of Australia; great-grandchildren Gavin
Brenton, Korbyn, and Max Newton of Winnsboro; Charlie, Maxell, Oliver, and Hannah Braught
of Baton Rouge, LA; Kierra and Kiya Ross and Carter Powell of Lindale.
With an infectious smile and laugh, a passion for bluegrass and waltzes, and a spirit of fun,
Carolyn lived her life showing us the joy to be found in caring for God’s creations – great and
small.
A Memorial / Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 6, 2024,
at Beaty Funeral Home, 816 W. Broadway in Winnsboro, TX. Reverends Michael Moore and
Susan Gross will be officiating. Following the service, family and friends are invited to Tinney
Chapel United Methodist Church (449 CR 4620, Winnsboro) to celebrate Carolyn’s life by
sharing memories, a bowl of stew, and time together.
