Thomas David Mcclenny

November 1, 1948 — September 25, 2013

On September 25, 2013 Thomas David (Toby) McClenny passed away peacefully at his home after a long struggle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Mineola, TX, 2:00 PM on Saturday September 28, 2013 with Dr. Mark Neeley officiating. Visitation time will be held at Beaty Funeral Home in Mineola from 6-8 PM on Friday September 27, 2013.

Dr. McClenny was born in Mineola on November 1, 1948 to the late Coy Lee McClenny and Oleta Moore McClenny and was immediately nicknamed Toby by his grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Patricia Norris McClenny, one son, Blair McClenny and wife Rie of Brooklyn, NY, and one daughter, Brooke McClenny of Nashville, TN. He is also survived by two sisters, Bertha Moore and Margie Young of Garland, and numerous other family members and friends.


Dr. McClenny began his education in the New Hope School and transferred to Mineola schools in the 6th grade. He graduated from Mineola High School, where he participated in every sport, and he attended North Texas State University as well as the University Of Houston College Of Optometry. He practiced optometry in Mineola for almost 30 years. During that time he was an active member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, a Sunday School teacher, and a choir member and soloist. He served the community through the Kiwanis Club, the Mineola Youth Foundation, and the Mineola School Board. He was a member of Gideons International and enjoyed speaking on their behalf.


For several years he participated in medical mission trips to other countries, providing eyecare while sharing his faith in Jesus Christ. In 2003 he and his wife joined International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention and moved to Thailand to continue this ministry fulltime. They lived for 7 years in Thailand, then several months in India, followed by 2 years in the U.K. Whether in Nepal or East Texas, Toby never grew tired of telling people of his absolute trust in his Savior, Jesus Christ.
