Verdell Matter

November 11, 1936 — June 18, 2024

Verdell F. Walter Matter, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, peacefully passed away on June 18, 2024, at the age of 87. Born on November 11, 1936, in Decorah, Iowa. Verdell was the beloved son of Walter Matter and Laverne (Bolson) Matter.


Verdell's life was defined by his deep passions and unwavering devotion to his nation and family. He found immense joy in his lifelong pursuits of hunting, fishing, and competing with field trial dogs. As an active member of the American Kennel Club Field Trials, Verdell not only excelled in these hobbies but also treasured the friendships and camaraderie he found within the community.


For 63 years, Verdell shared love and companionship with his wife, Jerry Lou Matter, who partnered with him in his love of the outdoors, business and family. He was a devoted father to his son, Dr. Gregory John Matter, and daughter-in-law Danna of Sherman, TX; daughters, Tracy Eckert and husband John of Garland, TX, and Teri Matter of Grand Saline, TX and Orchard, CO. Verdell also leaves behind his brother, Gordon Matter, and sister-in-law Gaylynn of Irving, TX. His legacy continues through twelve grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.


Verdell had a proud German heritage and will be remembered as a successful and accomplished manager with effective results. He was unwavering in his thoughts and dedication in shaping the next generation. He had an adept ability to help motivate others towards betterment and change. He was an outspoken voice to help his family prosper. His legacy lives on through the memories and values he imparted to his family and friends.

Verdell F. Walter Matter leaves behind a legacy of adventure, strength, counsel and memories that will forever be remembered by all who knew him. His spirit will live on in the hearts of his family and friends, a testament to a life well-lived and deeply loved.
