Virginia Joy Litton

June 28, 1930 — September 13, 2023

Mrs. Virginia Joy Hellums Litton, age 93, of Winnsboro, passed away at her home on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 in Winnsboro. She was born on June 28, 1930 in Dallas to the late James Green and Virginia Green.


Joy was a computer programmer for 7 yrs at Atlantic Oil, 21 yrs with Chilton Credit Bureau and 5 yrs with Blue Cross Blue Shield until retirement.


She was a lifetime member of the Christian Church/Disciples of Christ, with her current membership in Central Christian Church in Winnsboro. She was very active and involved in the Christian Women’s Fellowship/Disciples Women in the areas where she lived over the years, many of those with her mother. She was a Christian woman of deep faith who mentored many others.


She was a member of the Toastmasters Club. She volunteered with many organizations, both through the church and in the communities, including Meals On Wheels, and the Backpack Ministry in Winnsboro.


She was an avid advocate for support of various charitable organizations, both local and worldwide, and not only gave personally to many of them, but also set up a “Whole Church Tithe Giving Ministry” at several Christian Churches and served on the Outreach Committees, most recently at Central Christian Church in Winnsboro.


She loved reading, and had a vast library. She liked doing jigsaw puzzles and crossword puzzles. She enjoyed engaging in political discussions; Bible studies and discussions; her plants, gardens, and bird feeding; fishing; and visiting with and keeping up with her family, friends and extended family.


She took many trips with her family over the years, and after she and Bob retired took trips in an RV to many of the National Parks.


She was preceded in death by husbands, Robert Fields Hellums and Herman Neal Litton.

Survivors include her sons, Dr. James Roger Hellums and wife Wanee Lao, Larry Robert Hellums and Kym M. of Ft. Worth, and Kim David Hellums of Winnsboro; four grandchildren, Ryan Hellums, Garrett Hellums, Jordan Hellums, Hope Hellums; seven great grandchildren, Khloey Rodriguez, Christian Rodriguez, Kashten Rodriguez, Hudson Hellums, Hendrix Hellums, Harper Hellums, Emmalynn Hellums, and a host of friends.


Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 27th, 2023 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Beaty Funeral Home-Winnsboro, 816 W. Broadway, Winnsboro, TX 75494. Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, September 28th, 2023 at Prospect Cemetery, Jefferson, Texas at 1:00 pm, with Pastor Kevin Hollowell conducting. Interment will follow at Prospect Cemetery with Dr. James Hellums, Larry Robert Hellums, Ryan Hellums, Garrett Hellums, Jordan Hellums, and John Hellums serving as pallbearers.


In lieu of flowers the family ask that you make donations to the Central Christian Church of Winnsboro or to the Hospice of East Texas.
