Windell Dale Horton

CMSgt Windell D. Horton, U.S. Air Force retired, age 92, of the Rosewood community died in Winnsboro, Texas on September 8th, 2024. Burial will be at Lee Cemetery in Winnsboro, Texas.

Windell was born on November 1, 1931, in Old Fate Community of Rockwall County, Texas. The youngest of six children of Gordon and Julia Lee Taylor Horton. The family moved to the Tinneys Chapel Community south of Winnsboro, Texas in February 1938. He graduated from Winnsboro High School in the spring of 1949 and from Allen Hancock College in Santa Maria, California in 1967.

Windell enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in November 1949 in Dallas, Texas and retired in March 1977 at Warner-Robbins, Georgia as a Communications Maintenance Superintendent. Military assignments were in Texas, New Jersey, Illinois, Germany, Tennessee, North Carolina, England, Arizona, California, Thailand, Arkansas, Turkey and Georgia. After retirement from the Air Force he lived at Ava, Missouri; Winnsboro, Texas; Yellville and Jasper Arkansas, before moving to Rosewood, Texas in February 1990, where he remained for over 29 years. He then moved back to Winnsboro in August 2019.

Windell married Johanna Maria Kusser in Kaiserslautern, Germany on September 2, 1953; Pauline Lynch at Winnsboro, Texas on November 17, 1979 and Doris Glynn Hymer, the daughter of Jeffie Bradford and Ouida Fennell Hill in Rosewood on September 10, 1993.

Windell is survived by his sister Wanda Nell Sims and niece Karen Sims; Windell is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Windell was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Doris Glynn Horton; his brother Glen Bert Horton; his sisters Hazel May Barringer, Maggie Verniece Whittle, and Reba Cleo Howard; and his stepson Robert William Horton
